New publication on atmospheric blocking

Kamilya Yessimbet published a new article "Heavy Alpine snowfall in January 2019 connected to atmospheric blocking" in Weather.

Kamilya Yessimbet is one of the doctoral students of DK Climate Change in the field of climate physics. In her research, she focuses on the physical mechanisms of extreme weather events. Together with her colleagues, she aims to better understand the physics of atmospheric phenomena and atmospheric circulation. In her recent article, she investigates the factors that contributed to the heavy snowfall in January 2019, which hit the Northern Alps and broke 100-year records in some regions. The episode of heavy snowfall was linked to an atmospheric phenomenon called blocking, which persisted over the North Atlantic, and to conditions in the polar stratosphere. The results highlight the importance of studying these links to improve winter weather forecasts.
