Research Questions
Research Questions in the DKCC:
Answers to these questions are challenging as they must take into account multiple disciplines, actors and spatial and temporal scales. Interdisciplinary dialogue and a common understanding based on it form the basis for a better understanding of the significance and effects of climate change and for the development of sustainable strategies.
One of the overarching goals of the DKCC research programme is to develop concepts that allow us to "find a common language" at a scientific level, while at the same time forming practicable tools at the level of individual disciplines. The interdisciplinary approach of the DKCC is not only established by the different disciplines involved, but is also reflected in the extensive interdisciplinary research experience of the DKCC members within international networks.
Phase 1 (2014-2018):
- How can the uncertainties associated with climate change be dealt with in the natural and social sciences and from the perspective of normative theories?
- What are the critical thresholds of ecological, social and economic systems, taking into account their vulnerability and resilience, and how do they relate to normative thresholds of well-being (sufficiency justice)?
- What are scientifically sound, technologically and institutionally feasible, economically efficient and ethically justifiable and sustainable strategies for responding to climate change?
Phase 2 (2018-2022):
- What are the strategies for a transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient society and economy, and how can the necessary qualitative transition be implemented and legitimised politically and legally?
- How should we deal with uncertainties and risks, in particular with extreme events and the associated consequences?
